Who is Omar Marmoush?

Reports have emerged in the English media about Manchester City’s interest in signing Egyptian Omar Marmoush, the Frankfurt player, in an effort to save their inconsistent season.

Pep Guardiola is looking for attacking solutions as the team’s results have struggled this season, and Marmoush is among his top priorities for a potential January transfer.

Marmoush This Season

At 25 years old, Marmoush has played 24 matches across all competitions this season, scoring 18 goals and providing 12 assists, bringing his total goal contributions to 30 across all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

Omar Marmoush has scored 13 goals and provided 7 assists in the German Bundesliga this season, contributing to 20 goals in total.

This places him second in goal contributions across the top five European leagues, just behind his fellow Egyptian Mohamed Salah, who has contributed to 30 goals.

Marmoush’s market value surged from €15 million in 2023 to over €60 million by the end of December 2024.

His Journey at Wadi Degla

Ali Abu Gresha, the head of the football sector at Wadi Degla, insisted on bringing in French coach Patrice Carteron, the former manager of Wadi Degla, to watch the player in the youth sector.

Carteron decided to give Omar Marmoush his first opportunity in a match against Al-Ittihad Alexandria when he was just 17 years old, where he succeeded in providing an assist in Wadi Degla’s 3-2 victory.

However, Marmoush’s real breakthrough came under Ahmed Hossam Mido, who decided to feature him in a match against Smouha in the league.

Over 9 years ago, former Tottenham player Ahmed Hossam Mido predicted that an Egyptian player would become the talk of the world, and of course, he was referring to Omar Marmoush.

Mido stated in a television interview at the time: “Remember the name Omar Marmoush, he will become one of Egypt’s best strikers in no time.”

Before being promoted to the first team at the age of 17, Marmoush had already been the top scorer in the Cairo U-16 league, scoring a significant number of goals.

Marmoush played only 18 matches for Wadi Degla, scoring 3 goals and providing 1 assist.

After Mido’s departure from Wadi Degla, Marmoush moved on to his first professional experience with the Wolfsburg reserve team on August 31, 2017, in a deal worth nearly €400,000.

Wadi Degla President Talks About Marmoush

Maged Samy, the president of Wadi Degla, who played a key role in introducing Marmoush to the global stage, spoke about him: “I believed in Marmoush’s talent from the beginning because his numbers as a youth player were double those of his peers.”

He added, “His focus and commitment in training were outstanding, and at that point, we saw in him the potential of a professional player. We are a club that relies on data analysis because numbers never lie.”

The German Experience

Wolfsburg decided to loan Marmoush to St. Pauli, where he shone by contributing to 10 goals in 21 matches. He was then loaned again to VfB Stuttgart.

His time at Stuttgart wasn’t the best in his career, as he contributed to just 8 goals, scoring 3 and assisting 5 in 21 matches.

At the end of his contract with Wolfsburg, Marmoush moved to Frankfurt, where he quickly became a standout performer.

Marmoush has played 65 matches for Frankfurt, contributing to 53 goals by scoring 35 and assisting 18.

Since joining Frankfurt, he has been their top scorer, top assist provider, and the player with the most goal contributions.

Not only is he a prolific goal scorer and creator, but according to SofaScore, Marmoush is also the most successful Arab player in the top five European leagues when it comes to dribbling, completing 102 successful dribbles.

With the Egypt National Team

Marmoush was called up to the Egypt senior team on October 8, 2021, when the legendary Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz was at the helm.

His first international match was against Libya, where he marked his debut by scoring his first international goal. In his second match, he also provided his first assist.

Since then, Marmoush has contributed to 9 goals for the Egyptian national team, scoring 6 and assisting 3 in 35 appearances.

Despite numerous changes in the national team’s coaching staff, Marmoush has secured a spot in Egypt’s starting lineup, currently under coach Hossam Hassan.

Could Omar Marmoush be the one to rescue Manchester City and prove to be the worthy successor to his fellow Egyptian, Mohamed Salah, the Premier League’s top scorer this season?
